The Commission of Veterans Affairs is a five person group which oversees the execution and operations of the County's Veterans Affairs program. These members are Veterans who serve a three-year term. Our current Commission includes:

Commissioner Biographies:

Tommy Chance, Chair: July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2027 (Roland)

Tommy is a husband of almost 40 years with two children and seven grandchildren. He has distinguished himself in both the US Army and US Air Force over 25 years. Equally, he has distinguished himself by serving at Danfoss company in Ames for 27 years and is now working at The Well in Ames. He is an Elder at the Zearing Christian Church, Adjutant for American Post Legion 307 in Roland, and a Disabled Veteran.

Luke Vance, Vice-Chair: July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2028 (Sheldahl)

Luke enlisted in the US Army Reserves during high school and has been serving for 10 years, currently at the rank of Staff Sergeant. He has had one tour of duty in Iraq. As a lifelong resident of Sheldahl, Luke has a desire to help bridge the gap with younger Veterans in Story County.

Doug Sargent, Secretary: July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2026 (Roland)

Doug grew up in Jewell and enlisted in the Army National Guard while in high school. During his time in the Army Doug worked as a 68B (aircraft power plant repair) and 68D (power train mech.). After 9-11, Doug joined the 132nd Fighter Wing, Des Moines and worked in Planning, Scheduling, & Development retiring in 2010. Doug Lives in Roland with his wife Denise and has two grown children. He is excited to help support Veterans.

Nicolas Briseño, Commissioner: July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2028 (Ames)

Nic grew up in Manson, IA, graduating in 2001 and joining the Marine Corps Reserve. He served with Charlie Battery 1/14 out of Waterloo, IA through a deployment to Iraq 2005/2006 and then joined General Support Maintenance Company, Rock Island, IL through 2011. Nic currently resides in Ames, IA with his wife Tracy and three daughters and looks forward to working with the Veterans Commission in continued support of our Veterans.
