Story County citizens have the right to information about amounts, location & potential effects of hazardous chemicals which are stored or present in your community.
Facilities with extremely hazardous substances and threshold quantity amounts must annually report this information to local fire departments, the LEPC and the Iowa DNR. Those agencies will provide that information to the public for their viewing upon request.
Toxic releases into the environment must also be reported to the LEPC as well as state and federal agencies. Many chemicals covered under law may pose long term health and environmental hazards.
Toxic release inventories (Tier II Reports) should be filed annually and show estimated amounts of chemicals, released amounts transported as waste, how chemical waste was treated and efficiency of treatments.
