Well Rehabilitation
Many of the older private water supply wells that are still used in Story County were installed at a time when there was no State of Iowa or Story County regulation over well placement concerns or groundwater safety measures.
New water supply wells must be installed using regulations spelled out in IAC 567-49. It is the purpose of this chapter of Iowa Code to protect the public health by protecting groundwater supplies from contamination by establishing uniform minimum standards and methods for well construction and reconstruction for nonpublic water supply wells.
Through the Iowa Grants to Counties Program, the Story County Environmental Health Department may have funds available to update/reconstruct older wells that may have some easily corrected problems. Please contact our department for more information regarding Grants to Counties funding or to see if your well would qualify for rehabilitation.
