FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025

The Story County Community Foundation (Foundation) has awarded Story County Conservation (SCC) a $100,000 Impact Grant to commemorate the Foundation’s 20th anniversary.

ThiStory County Conservation employees pose with giant check written for $100,000s significant investment will advance two major conservation and recreation projects: the development of the Deppe Family Conservation Area (Ames) and improvements to the beach at Hickory Grove Park (Colo).

“We are thrilled to be selected to partner with the Foundation to improve the opportunities Story County residents have to enjoy the outdoors,” said SCC Director Mike Cox.

The Impact Grant, presented at the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 2 at Reiman Gardens, will directly support projects that expand access to nature and enhance water quality for future generations. Funds will be paired with Story County Water and Land Legacy bond funds to maximize community benefits.

The Deppe Family Conservation Area, acquired in 2023, is a 124-acre property located immediately south of McFarland Park. Plans for the wildlife refuge will keep a light footprint and are to include restored prairie, upland timber and creek corridors, with public amenities such as a trail system, picnic shelter and wayfinding signage. The area is expected to open to the public in 2027, offering new opportunities for outdoor recreation and conservation education.

At Hickory Grove Park, design is underway for improvements to the popular beach area. Enhancements will focus on improving water quality in Hickory Grove Lake, including a tiered overlook, treatment area for stormwater runoff and native plantings. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Lakes Program is a key partner on this project.
