January is National Radon Action Month. During the month of January, the Story County Environmental Health Department hopes to increase the public's awareness of the presence of radon in our county.
Radon is an odorless and invisible radioactive gas naturally released from rocks, soil, and water. In outdoor environments, radon levels are very low and generally not considered harmful. Radon can get into homes or buildings through small cracks or holes and build up to higher levels. Breathing in high levels of radon over long periods can cause lung cancer.
The good news is that lung cancer from radon is preventable. Testing for radon in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. Stop by the Story County Environmental Health Department in Nevada (lower level Story County Administration Building) to pick up a radon test kit ($8).
First 50 radon kits are FREE during the month of January.
