[ARCHIVED] O.W.L.S. Topic Features Dakins Lake Improvement Project

Story County Conservation invites the public to the monthly O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors) program at the Story County Conservation Center at McFarland Park (56461 180th Street) northeast of Ames. "Dakins Lake Improvement Project" will be presented on Tuesday, September 4, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Exciting opportunities are coming to Dakins Lake! Join us for SCC Special Project Ranger Carol Wiliams’ presentation on the Dakins Lake Improvement project. Thanks to the Dakins family, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) was able to purchase 62 acres west of the existing park in 2009. The Story County Conservation Board and the Story County Board of Supervisors with input from interested citizens have developed a major expansion of Dakins Lake. A new lake (below the existing one) and larger campground will be two major features.

O.W.L.S. programs are designed for "boomers" or older – but anyone can attend. An optional luncheon follows the program at 12 p.m. Lunch is catered for a $7.00 fee, and registration is required for lunch by 3:30 p.m., Friday, August 31. The planned lunch menu for September is BBQ pork sandwich, cole slaw, chips, and cookie.
