Story County is currently in the process of inspecting each of the bridges throughout the county. The county is required to perform these bridge reviews every two years. This year’s inspections have revealed a large number of bridges that require a new load posting, a reduction of an existing load posting, or a width restriction. The width restrictions mean the portion of the bridge restricted is unsafe to travel across. The bridges that require a load posting will have signs installed near the bridge notifying traffic. Bridge restrictions may range from 4’ to nearly half the width of the bridge. Barrels will be placed on the restricted portion until a permanent restriction can be installed. An example of this is shown in the picture above. These restrictions will remain in effect until the bridge can be repaired or completely replaced.
