[ARCHIVED] Recent Bridge Restrictions

Restricted Bridge

Story County is currently in the process of inspecting each of the bridges throughout the county. The county is required to perform these bridge reviews every two years. This year’s inspections have revealed a number of bridges that require a new load posting, a reduction of an existing load posting, or a width restriction. The bridges that require a load posting will have signs installed near the bridge notifying traffic. A width restriction means that a portion of the bridge is unsafe to travel across with any load. Bridge width restrictions may range from 4’ to nearly half the width of the bridge. Barrels or signs will be placed on the restricted portion until a permanent restriction can be installed. An example of this is shown in the picture above. These restrictions will remain in effect until the bridge can be repaired or completely replaced. If we are unable to maintain the signage on these bridges due to vandalism, the bridge may need to be completely closed until repairs can be made to insure the safety of the travelling public. A map of the recently restricted bridges can be viewed at the link below.
