Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas which results from the decay of uranium in soils. Radon gas emitted from soils under homes and buildings can enter these structures through openings in basement walls, crawl spaces, and floors.

In non-smokers, radon is the first leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Overall, exposure to indoor elevated radon levels is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends a radon action level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Studies by the EPA have shown that the state of Iowa has the highest percentage of homes above the action level of 4 pCi/L in the United States.

You can easily test for radon in your home by purchasing a radon test kit. The best time to test for radon levels in your building is during the winter heating season, but tests can be conducted at any time of year.

The Story County Environmental Health Department, located in the lower level of the Story County Administration Building, 600 9th St., Nevada, IA has kits available year round for purchase at $5.00 each.
