RE: Xenia Rural Water District Reports Water Main Break
Xenia Rural Water District officials have reported a water main break affecting the service area immediately south of Ames. Nearly 300 rural customers served by Xenia in the area are without water service.
The area is generally located south of Highway 30, bounded on the west by the Boone County line, on the south by the Polk County line, and on the east by Interstate 35.
Crews are on site making repairs.
Once water service is resumed, a boil advisory will be in place due to the potential for bacterial contamination. It is recommended that water be boiled before being used for drinking and cooking. Or, an alternate source, such as bottled water can be used. The boil advisory will be lifted once repairs have been made and water samples have been tested to be sure the water is safe.
To boil water for consumption, follow these steps. Bring water to boil and boil for one minute. Let it cool before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, ice, brushing teeth and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes.
Information regarding the boil advisory will be provided through the media.
